Winter Ecology Hike at Nolde Forest Environmental Education Center

02/06/2026 09:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET

Description

Join us for a winter ecology hike! We'll discuss animal adaptations to the cold, try our hand at identifying animal tracks in the snow, and discuss how plants survive extreme weather. If it's actively snowing, we will include snowflake identification. Did you know that you can look at a snowflake with a magnifying glass and tell what is going on with the weather based on the structure of the crystals?

The hike will be about 2 miles with moderate uphills and downhills. Recent deep snow will require wearing snowshoes; hiking poles will be useful, too. If you don't have snowshoes, indicate this when registering; KTA will confirm if we have a pair to loan to you.

Participants must dress for the weather. Avoid cotton and opt for wearing synthetic fabrics. Windproof coats and pants are ideal outer layers. All participants are expected to carry the following in their pack:

  • extra layers to stay warm and dry (this is crucial in case a member on our hike gets injured and we need to stop to provide first aid)
  • water (heating it at home and keeping it in the interior of your pack will keep it from freezing)
  • snacks

Date: Friday, February 6
Time: 9am-noon
Location: Nolde Forest, North Pond Parking Lot, 100 Church Road, Reading, PA 19607
