Maple Sugaring Demonstration & Winter Tree Identification Hike

03/01/2026 11:30 AM - 01:30 PM ET

Description

Learn winter tree identificaion with PA Master Naturalists Ross and Mary Patterson and experience a live maple sugaring demonstrate site with Lancaster County Park Naturalists.  On this 2.5 mile-hike, we will look at tree buds and bark, key features to assist in tree identification.  Our hike will conclude at Lancaster County Park's live maple sugaring demonstration site where we'll get to sample maple sugar candy and learn how tree sap becomes maple syrup.

The hike will follow the Conestoga River and cross a historic covered bridge.  The route includes moderate ups and downs and some uneven footing.  Depending on the weather, there may be a few emerging spring wildflowers of note.  If there are snowy or icy conditions, participants will be emailed in advance to ensure everyone brings appropriate footwear.
