Spring Migration Hike at Middle Creek

02/27/2025 04:00 PM - 06:00 PM ET

Description

Middle Creek is a Globally Important Bird Area managed by the Pennsylvania Game Commission.  It provides an annual resting spot for migrating tundra swans and snow geese late February and early March.  During this time, bird counts can reach over 100,000.  Annual counts depend on the freeze, thaw cycle of the lake and nearby fields that provide food.

Join us on Thursday, February 27 from 4pm-6pm for a 3.8 mile hike using the landscape to tell the story of these migrating birds.  Our hike begins with a flat stretch before heading uphill to take in a view of Middle Creek.  After a descent, and some relatively flat ground, we'll have one final, moderate uphill climb to take us to a good viewing spot to watch the tundra swans and snow geese return as the sun sets.  The last mile of our hike is flat but may occur at dusk.  During the hike, we'll discuss how eminent domain was used to create Middle Creek as a resource for the public.  We also will learn a bit about the migratory habits of snow geese and tundra swans and how we, as humans, are impacting ecosystems that the birds rely on for survival.  What steps can we take at home to improve the liklelihood of successful migrations?

Please Note:

  • Due to bird flu precautions, our hike will stay away from the lake shoreline.  We have run our hiking route by Game Commission staff, and this route falls within suggested protocol during the migration season.
  • Middle Creek can become VERY busy during migration season.  Please look for the KTA directional signs indicating where to park and meet the group.  We will meet at the Sunfish Pond Parking, 40.268302, -76.248599.
  • The Visitor Center is an incredible resource.  You are highly encouraged to come early and check it out.  You can easily spend an hour in it.
  • An optional group dinner is available at a nearby restaurant; indicate your interest when registering so an accurate reservation can be made.
  • Bring a headlamp, layers, pertinent personal first aid, water, and snacks.
